Parashah Terumah - "Contribution"

Last week's Torah Portion Mishpatim explained how the Israelites entered into covenant with the LORD at Mount Sinai. The terms of the covenant were written down in the Sefer HaBrit "the Book of the Covenant", which contained a variety of laws to specifically govern the Jewish people in the Promised Land.

When the people agreed to obey the terms of the covenant, Moses took sacrificial blood and sprinkled it on them saying, "Behold the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words" Hebrews 9:18.

The power of His blood: "According to the law, in fact, nearly everything must be purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness." Hebrews 9:22

"18That is why even the first covenant was not put into effect without blood. 19For when Moses had proclaimed every commandment of the law to all the people, he took the blood of calves and goats, along with water, scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled the scroll and all the people, 20saying, “This is the blood of the covenant, which God has commanded you to keep.”

21In the same way, he sprinkled with blood the tabernacle and all the vessels used in worship. 22According to the law, in fact, nearly everything must be purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness." Hebrews 9:18-22

Moses then re-ascended the mount to receive the tablets of stone inscribed with the Ten Commandments and to learn additional Torah from the LORD.

Parashat Terumah opens with the LORD saying to Moses:

1Then the LORD said to Moses, 2“Tell the Israelites to bring Me an offering. You are to receive My offering from every man whose heart compels him. 3This is the offering you are to accept from them: gold, silver, and bronze; Exodus 25:1-2

Terumah means "contribution," "portion," "gift," or "freewill offering." In this Parashah, ADONAI asks for help "from every man whose heart moves him" to provide materials for the Mishkan kodesh (holy Tabernacle), a structure that would symbolize His Presence among the Israelites during their sojourn to the land of Canaan.

The word mishkan משׁכּן comes from a root word meaning "to dwell" and from which the word shekhinah שׁכינה is derived: The English transliteration of the Hebrew word meaning "dwelling" or "settling" and denotes the presence of ADONAI in a place.

This holy tent was intended to be "God's dwelling place among the people" where sacrifices were offered and God would communicate with the people through Moses and the Kohen Gadol (High Priest).

Elihana sings this beautiful song that we wrote together called 'DWELL WITH US", that describes exactly the heart of the Father towards His people; that He would dwell with us!

ADONAI asked for help "from every man whose heart moved him" to offer a contribution; a Terumah: תּרוּמה for making this portable sanctuary collectively called the "Tabernacle", a multi-chamber tent-like structure that would symbolize God's Presence among the Israelites.

In other words, ADONAI gave the unique opportunity for the Israelites to contribute towards this very special project of making this portable sanctuary for His Presence! It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! And those who saw this opportunity, were moved deeply within their hearts to participate and contribute!

Gold, silver, brass, red and purple yarns, fine linens, oils, spices, precious stones, etc., all were needed for this labor intensive project.

God said to Moses, "Exactly as I show you concerning the pattern of the Tabernacle, and of all its furniture, so you shall make it." Exodus 25:9

A replica of the Ark of the Covenant

God then showed Moses “the pattern” according to which the Tabernacle and its contents were to be made. First an ark of acacia wood was to be overlaid with pure gold inside and out. The ark was to be fitted with gold rings and gold covered poles to make it portable. The two tablets of the law were to be stored inside the ark. Two cherubim (angel-like figures) were to be placed facing each other over a cover of the ark called the kapporet: Mercy Seat. The ark was to be housed within an inner chamber of the tent called the Holy of Holies. Adjacent to the Holy of Holies was a second chamber called the Holy Place. This chamber would contain a table overlaid with pure gold that held twelve loaves of bread along with a golden, seven-branched menorah. The Holy of Holies was separated from the Holy Place by an ornamental veil called the Parochet.

Now, the question begs to be asked: Where did the Israelites get the materials required to build the Tabernacle? After all, when considering all of the materials required for such a labor-intensive project, these are not items normally found lying around in the desert!

Well, much of it came from despoiling the Egyptians!

"35Furthermore, the Israelites acted on Moses’ word and asked the Egyptians for articles of silver and gold, and for clothing. 36And the LORD gave the people such favor in the sight of the Egyptians that they granted their request. In this way they plundered the Egyptians." Exodus 12:35-36

The LORD knew they were going to need all of these materials to build a Tabernacle for Him, in the middle of the desert! And so, He made a way, where there seemed to have been no way, and caused the Israelites to plunder the Egyptian in the most supernaturally docile way: by simply asking them for it!

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks, it will be opened.” Matthew 7:7-8
