The Story of Hanukkah
Hanukkah, or the Festival of Dedication, commemorates the miraculous rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem after it was desecrated by the Seleucid king Antiochus IV around 165 BCE. It is also called the “Festival of Lights,” celebrating God’s miraculous provision of oil for the menorah in the Temple, which burned for eight days instead of one.
Scriptural Foundations
While Hanukkah is not directly commanded in the Torah, it is referenced in the New Covenant scriptures. Yeshua Himself observed Hanukkah:
“At that time, the Feast of Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It was winter, and Yeshua was walking in the Temple in the portico of Solomon.” —John 10:22-23
This shows that Yeshua, our Messiah, affirmed the significance of Hanukkah as a time of dedication to God.
1. The Light of the World
As we light, the menorah, we reflect on how the menorah’s light reminds us of Yeshua, who declared:
“I am the Light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” —John 8:12
We are also called not to assimilate with the pagans! We are to be set apart and to obey ADONAI & HIS WORD! KADISH L’ADONAI- holiness to the Lord!
Just as the menorah illuminated the Temple, Yeshua illuminates our lives, guiding us in righteousness and truth.
2. Victory Through Faith
Hanukkah celebrates the miraculous victory of the small HEBREW Maccabean army over the mighty Seleucid forces. This reflects the principle in Zechariah 4:6:
“Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit,” says the Lord of Hosts.
As believers, we are reminded that our ultimate victory comes through faith in God, not through our own strength.
3. Rededication to ADONAI
Hanukkah is a time of spiritual renewal, rededicating ourselves as living temples of the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit):
“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God?” —1 Corinthians 6:19
Let us cleanse our hearts from sin and offer our lives as holy and acceptable to God (Romans 12:1).
4. ADONAI’s Miraculous Provision
The miracle of the oil lasting eight days reminds us of God’s provision in our lives. Just as He provided for the Maccabees, He provides for us daily:
“And my God will supply every need of yours according to His riches in glory in Messiah Yeshua.”
—Philippians 4:19
Prophetic Significance of Hanukkah
Hanukkah foreshadows the ultimate rededication and restoration of the Kingdom of ADONAI under Yeshua the Messiah!
Practical Applications for the body of Messiah:
1. Light the Hanukkiah (Menorah)
Each night, as you light the candles, reflect on how Yeshua is the Light of the World and how you can shine His light to others (Matthew 5:14-16).
2. Study the Scriptures
Read passages related to light and dedication, such as Psalm 119:105, Isaiah 9:2, and Romans 12:1-2.
3. Celebrate God’s Faithfulness
Share testimonies of God’s provision and miracles in your life with family and friends.
4. Bless Others
Use this season, there are a lot of people hurting around the world, we should shine the light of Adonai, with love and kindness, reflecting God’s goodness.
As we celebrate Hanukkah, let us remember the faithfulness of God, the victory we have through Him, and the light of Yeshua shining in the darkness. May we dedicate ourselves anew to His service, bringing His light to the world.
Chag Hanukkah Sameach!
